SBS 'Doctor X' 5·18 Episode Controversy: Halt Petition, Attacks on Kim Ji-won's SNS and the 'Assassin(s)' Parallel (Timeline)

Doctor X's 5·18 Gwangju episode hit a series-high 19.5% and drew a National Assembly halt petition and attacks on Kim Ji-won's Instagram. SBS has not commented.

TL;DR: Episode 6 of SBS's Friday–Saturday drama Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia (닥터X: 하얀 마피아의 시대), starring Kim Ji-won, aired on 24 October 2026. It told the story of a patient shot in the head during the 5·18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising of May 1980. The episode hit a series-high 19.5% (Nielsen Korea, nationwide). It also triggered a National Assembly petition to halt the broadcast, which passed its 100-signature pre-screening threshold within a day, and a wave of hostile comments on Kim Ji-won's Instagram. As of 26 October SBS has made no official statement. The show's chief producer posted only "no fear" on social media. On 26 October Yonhap put the row alongside the fight over the film The Assassin(s), where criticism of a history-based story also ended up aimed at an actor.

The show: what's verified

  • Title: Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia (닥터X: 하얀 마피아의 시대; DramaWiki lists it as Doctor X: Mafia in White). SBS markets it as a "medical noir".
  • Slot: Fridays and Saturdays at 9:50 p.m., 12 episodes, first aired 9 October 2026. It streams on Netflix after the SBS broadcast.
  • Original: a remake of TV Asahi's Doctor-X: Surgeon Michiko Daimon (2012–2021, seven seasons), according to Hankyung.
  • Production: Studio S, Studio Dragon and High Zium Studio. Directed by Lee Jung-rim, written by Pyeon Seong-geun (Korean Wikipedia credits). Chief producers are Lee Kwang-soon and Lee Ok-gyu.
  • Cast: Kim Ji-won plays Gye Su-jeong, the genius freelance surgeon. Lee Jung-eun plays Jang Hee-suk, head of the doctor-placement agency. Son Hyun-joo plays hospital director Bu Seung-kwon. Kim Woo-seok plays intern Park Tae-kyung. Jang Seung-jo made a special appearance as Na Dae-il in episodes 3–5. Ha Sung-kwang plays Oh Sang-beom, the patient at the centre of episode 6.

The Korean version already mixed in local issues before episode 6. Hankyung noted that it draws on the fight over CCTV in operating rooms and the doctors' strike against medical-school expansion. Episode 6 went much further back.

What episode 6 actually showed

Yonhap, Aju, Tenasia and Wikitree describe the episode this way:

  • Oh Sang-beom was shot in the head in Gwangju in 1980. A bullet fragment left in his skull has caused seizures, headaches and hallucinations for 46 years. He also carries guilt over his older brother, who died. Gye Su-jeong takes on his surgery.
  • The episode recreates 1980 Gwangju, showing citizens hit by tear gas and gunfire from troops.
  • A line of dialogue says the fragment in his head is key evidence of helicopter gunfire by the military regime at the time. Munhwa Ilbo noted the bullet is treated in the plot as a historical record.
  • Characters ride bus No. 518 to the National 5·18 Democratic Cemetery.
  • Late in the episode, a fictional former president, "Ji Du-seok", is rushed in unconscious to the same hospital and comes face to face with Oh. Aju and Tenasia describe the character as evoking former president Chun Doo-hwan. Wikitree notes that some viewers guessed the name combines Chun Doo-hwan and Yoon Suk Yeol, but the production team has not explained the name.

Critics also complained about pacing. Munhwa Ilbo reported complaints that, after five fast-moving episodes, most of episode 6 was given over to the 5·18 story.

Background: 5·18 became a national memorial day in 1997. The same year, Korea's Supreme Court upheld Chun Doo-hwan's conviction for mutiny and insurrection, with a life sentence (later pardoned), as Aju pointed out.

The ratings: no sign of a boycott yet

Episode 6 drew 19.5% nationwide, according to Nielsen Korea. That is up 2.0 points from episode 5 and a series high. The figure measures who watched as the episode aired, before the backlash took off. Wikitree pointed out that it cannot show whether the petition or the comment war has moved viewers in either direction. Episode 7, on 30 October, is the first real test.

The petition

The petition, titled "Petition on halting the broadcast of the SBS drama Doctor X" (SBS 닥터X 드라마 방영중단에 관한 청원), was filed on 24 October on the National Assembly's public-consent petition site. According to Financial News, Yonhap and Munhwa Ilbo, the petitioner argued that:

  • 5·18 content "completely unrelated to the plot" appeared and "made many viewers frown";
  • Doctor X is "a doctor drama with no connection to politics", and the Japanese original focused on a doctor's own ability and contained nothing of the kind;
  • they "know 5·18 is our painful history and have no intention of denying it", but find it hard to accept a subject that is "politically disputed in its details" being used out of nowhere in a drama.

The petitioner asked for the broadcast to be halted and the production process examined. They also asked that the production team be called as witnesses before the National Assembly and that the broadcast review body look at the episode.

Where it stands: it passed the 100 pre-disclosure signatures within a day and is now under review for public posting. It has not been posted for full public signing. To be referred to the relevant standing committee, it would need 50,000 signatures within 30 days of going public, and even that would not mean the show is stopped. Aju also noted that Article 21 of the Constitution bans prior censorship. Broadcast content can be reviewed only after it airs, by the Korea Communications Standards Commission.

Kim Ji-won's Instagram

After the episode, Kim Ji-won's Instagram comments filled up with complaints, as reported by Aju, Tenasia and Wikitree. Comments they quoted included: "Why is 5·18 suddenly in here? I just want a cider drama"; "Goodbye, 518 Ji-won"; "I'm a fan, but the 518 content is disappointing — you should have turned it down"; and "Didn't you see Yoo Hae-jin crash and burn?". Some asked why she had appeared in a "left-leaning drama". Others said they would stop watching. Many replies in the same threads defended her, and Wikitree described the two camps as evenly matched.

Tenasia made a fair point. It is not known whether Kim knew about the 5·18 storyline when she signed. Actors usually see only the first one to four scripts before committing. Asked about it, Kim's side told Tenasia that because the question concerns the show's material and adaptation, it was "cautious about giving a specific answer". It did not say whether she knew in advance. Wikitree noted the obvious: actors do not decide a drama's subject matter.

SBS and the production team

  • SBS: no official statement, according to Munhwa Ilbo (as of the afternoon of 25 October) and Yonhap (26 October).
  • Studio S chief producer Lee Ok-gyu posted the drama's poster with the words "no fear" on social media on 24 October, the day of the broadcast. Munhwa Ilbo read it as a signal that the team will not be shaken by criticism and said it went up right after the episode aired. Wikitree said it could not confirm whether it went up before or after the broadcast. Lee has not explained it, so its meaning is unconfirmed.
  • Kim Ji-won's side: declined to comment on the substance (see above).

Fans and viewers: split

Opinion online is divided. Critics asked "why is 5·18 suddenly here?" and said the history "deserved its own drama". Supporters said the episode "addressed the wounds left by state violence" and that demanding a halt because you dislike a story "goes too far". On DC Inside's Doctor X gallery, fans posted a statement asking the production team to explain how and why the 5·18 material was added. Wikitree noted that the authors made a point of saying they were not opposing historical material as such or assuming political intent.

Yonhap's link to The Assassin(s)

On 26 October Yonhap set the Doctor X row next to the fight over Hur Jin-ho's film The Assassin(s) (암살자(들)), which is about the 1974 shooting that killed First Lady Yuk Young-soo. Yonhap noted that the dispute over that film's portrayal of history moved from rating attacks and boycotts to a protest outside the home of lead actor Yoo Hae-jin. Aju reported that on 4 October about 50 members of conservative groups rallied outside his house in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. Police then gave him personal protection, including a smartwatch and extra patrols, which was later lifted at the actor's request. (We covered the film's own dispute here: Assassin(s): the Yuk Young-soo film, a defamation complaint and the producer's driving record.)

The common thread, Yonhap and Aju argue, is that disputes over a story's subject end up aimed at the actor instead of being argued out as criticism or debate. Critic Kim Heon-sik told Yonhap that viewers are entitled to criticise the writing, but "regulatory approaches like demanding National Assembly verification or a halt are not desirable." Critic Jung Duk-hyun called the claims those of "some people who want to read it politically", not a majority view. He said that attacking an actor over a role "is close to a kind of McCarthyism." A broadcasting-industry source told Yonhap that a sensitive historical subject dropped suddenly into a popular medical drama will divide opinion, but that blaming the whole network or an actor for choices made in the script and direction "is excessive."

What's confirmed vs. what isn't

Confirmed: the episode's content as described by several outlets, the 19.5% rating, the petition's filing and its 100-signature pre-screening status, the hostile comments on Kim's Instagram, SBS's silence, and the "no fear" post.

Unconfirmed: what "no fear" was meant to say and exactly when it was posted; whether Kim knew about the storyline before signing; why the character is called "Ji Du-seok"; whether the petition will be made public or reach 50,000 signatures; and whether the controversy affects episode 7's rating.

Caution: the petition is a citizen's claim, not a ruling. Nothing about the show's broadcast has changed.
