ALPHA DRIVE ONE's Kim Geon-woo Sues WakeOne to Confirm His Member Status: Allegation, Hiatus and Lawsuit (Timeline)

ALD1's Kim Geon-woo, on hiatus since April over an alleged hot-mic remark, has sued WakeOne to confirm his status. What's alleged, what WakeOne says, and what's next.

TL;DR: Kim Geon-woo (김건우, 23), a member of the eight-member boy group ALPHA DRIVE ONE (ALD1), has filed a lawsuit against his agency WakeOne asking a court to confirm his status, which Korean media read as a bid to get back into the group. He has been on hiatus since 8 April 2026, after an online post alleged he had made inappropriate remarks about production staff during a pre-debut shoot. WakeOne admitted at the time that he made an "inappropriate expression" of frustration on a hot mic, but said it was muttered to himself and was not aimed at anyone. It called the other allegations online "not true". On 25 October the agency confirmed the legal process. It said the two sides could not agree on his future activities, and that ALPHA DRIVE ONE will carry on as seven members as planned. Kim's side has not made a public statement, and no court has ruled.

Chart: milestones from the table above. The 200-day figure counts from WakeOne's 8 April statement to the 25 October reports.

Who is Kim Geon-woo, and what is ALPHA DRIVE ONE?

ALPHA DRIVE ONE came out of Mnet's 2025 survival show Boys II Planet. The final line-up, as reported, was Lee Sang-won, Zhou Anxin, He Xinlong, Kim Geon-woo (4th), Zhang Jiahao (Arno), Lee Leo, Jung Sang-hyeon and Kim Jun-seo. WakeOne, a label under CJ ENM, manages the group.

The group debuted on 12 January 2026 with the mini album EUPHORIA. The Fact reported first-week sales of 1.44 million copies, the second-highest for a K-pop debut album. That scale is why what followed drew so much attention.

January: the allegation

Top Star News reported that in the same month as the debut, a post on an online community alleged that Kim had behaved badly toward broadcast staff at a shoot. Later reports describe it as a claim that he swore about a staff member while a microphone was still on. Chosun Biz, writing on 26 October, said the rumour concerned a KBS web-variety shoot. WakeOne has only ever said it was "a content shoot before debut", and has not named a programme.

That was not the first complaint about his behaviour. Top Star News noted that during Boys II Planet, a separate online post alleged he had behaved inappropriately toward other trainees at his former company. He apologised then, and the apology was later deleted. These are online allegations. Apart from the hot-mic remark, WakeOne says the various online claims are untrue.

For roughly two months neither Kim nor WakeOne said anything about the substance, according to Top Star News. Fans organised a series of coordinated campaigns (총공) and boycotts. They demanded a clear account of the facts, Kim's removal from the group if the claims were true, and protection for the other seven members. A fifth campaign had been announced. WakeOne's only public reaction in that period was a general notice. It said it was watching "indiscriminate slander and the spread of untrue rumours" about its artists, including ZEROBASEONE and ALPHA DRIVE ONE, and that it would take legal action. Fans criticised that notice for avoiding the question.

8 April: WakeOne's account and the hiatus

On 8 April WakeOne published a notice titled "Facts regarding ALPHA DRIVE ONE's Kim Geon-woo and future measures". Its account, as quoted in full by The Fact, Star Today and Star News:

  • The incident happened at a content shoot before debut.
  • Kim "expressed dissatisfaction using an inappropriate expression, without realising the microphone was on."
  • The remark "was not criticism or a personal attack aimed at a specific person, and came out as talking to himself. However, it was inappropriate under any circumstances."
  • The agency apologised to the production team right after the incident and "judged the matter closed through mutual communication". It said it stayed quiet afterwards so as not to put more pressure on the production team.
  • "Apart from this matter, the various allegations currently being raised online are not true."
  • After discussion with the agency, Kim "decided to take time for self-reflection". He would not take part in upcoming activities or the fan concert, and the group would "for the time being" continue as seven: Leo, Jun-seo, Arno, Sang-won, Xinlong, Anxin and Sang-hyeon.

The same day, Kim posted a handwritten apology. In it he wrote: "My immature words and actions caused many people concern and showed a disappointing side of me." He added: "Through this, I keenly felt how foolish my actions were," and promised to "become a more mature person and return".

Note the difference in wording between the two sides. The online posts alleged abuse aimed at a staff member. WakeOne said it was muttered to himself. That gap has never been settled publicly, and no recording has been verified by any outlet we cited. Some 25–26 October coverage summarises the incident more bluntly as "swearing at staff". Read those lines as the outlets' summaries, not as a new finding.

April to October: a seven-member group

ALPHA DRIVE ONE kept going without him. The group ran its STAR ROAD fan concert tour from June, released its second EP Unbreakable: Beast in August, and put out the digital single Talk to Me on 22 October, according to Top Star News and the Korea Herald. WakeOne's April notice said only that Kim was out "for the time being". It never gave a return date.

25 October: the lawsuit

My Daily broke the story on the morning of 25 October, Chosun Biz reported. Star News and Yonhap followed. According to these reports, Kim recently filed a suit for confirmation of status (지위 확인의 소) against WakeOne. Ilgan Sports described it as a claim to confirm both the validity of his exclusive contract and his status. The Korea Herald said the suit seeks to clarify his rights and obligations under the contract "rather than necessarily terminate it".

Why sue? Star News and OSEN reported that Kim's side wants to return to the group and went to court after the agency did not take the steps he wanted. Chosun Biz, citing My Daily, said he had raised the issue with WakeOne several times. Yonhap read the suit as "reconfirming that he is an ALPHA DRIVE ONE member" in order to press the agency to let him resume activities.

What we could not confirm from the reports: which court the case was filed in, the filing date, what exactly the suit asks for, and who represents Kim. None of the outlets we checked carried a statement from Kim or his lawyers as of 26 October.

WakeOne's response

WakeOne first gave a short confirmation: "This is a matter in which related legal proceedings are under way. We ask for your understanding that it is difficult to discuss specifics." Later on 25 October it posted a fuller statement on its official social media. Star News and OSEN published the full text. Key lines:

  • "We prepared various plans, including specific schedules and content, regarding Kim Geon-woo's future activities and continued discussions. However, in the course of coordinating his future direction, differences in our positions led to legal proceedings."
  • "We will respond faithfully in accordance with the prescribed procedures."
  • It asked fans not to spread "speculative content or inaccurate information" before the facts are established.
  • "ALPHA DRIVE ONE's activities will continue as planned," with support for "the seven members currently active."
  • "We will also continue communicating regarding Kim Geon-woo's future entertainment activities."

That last line matters. WakeOne did not say it was ending his contract or removing him. It drew a line between the seven-member group, which carries on, and Kim's "future entertainment activities", which it left open. Fans on Korean forums read that as a sign the agency may be offering him something other than a return to the group. WakeOne has not said what the "specific schedules and content" in its plan were.

Fan reactions

Most reaction on Korean communities was hostile to the lawsuit. Kagit compiled comments such as "if he comes back, fans will riot", "he damaged the group, the members and the company through his own fault, and now he is suing to come back?" and "whether he returns or leaves, the fandom takes a big hit." On instiz, users said WakeOne had "been protecting him as much as it could" and that "this time I'm rooting for WakeOne". Others said simply, "just leave quietly."

A second line of speculation is about strategy. Some users guessed that a status suit could be a way to leave without paying a penalty, or to force the agency's hand if he is kept inactive until his contract ends. One commenter claimed the contract has about six years left, which we could not verify. Others pointed out that confirming his status would not, by itself, put him back on stage. All of this is fan speculation. Kagit itself noted that the real purpose of the suit will only become clear as the case goes on.

26 October: follow-ups

Monday's coverage (Money Today, Chosun Biz, Hankook Ilbo, Aju, Korea Herald) restated the suit and WakeOne's position and added little new. As of the evening of 26 October KST, there is no report of a hearing date, no public statement from Kim's side, and no change to the group's seven-member schedule.

What's confirmed vs. what isn't

Confirmed (by WakeOne or multiple outlets):

  • Kim made an inappropriate remark on a hot mic at a pre-debut shoot. WakeOne admitted it on 8 April.
  • He has been on hiatus since 8 April, and the group has worked as seven since then.
  • He has filed a status-confirmation suit against WakeOne, and WakeOne confirmed legal proceedings are under way.
  • WakeOne says talks failed over "differences in position" and that 7-member activities continue.

Alleged or unverified:

  • The online claims that the remark was abuse aimed directly at a staff member. WakeOne says it was muttered to himself.
  • The other online claims about his behaviour, which WakeOne calls false.
  • The details of the suit: court, filing date, exactly what he is asking for, and his legal representation.
  • Fans' theories about his motive, and the length of his remaining contract.

Caution: this is an active lawsuit; nothing in it has been decided, and statements from Kim's side may change the picture.
