BTS Jungkook 'Reverse-Retouched' Airport Skin Photo: What Reports Say, Fan Backlash and What Is Unverified (Oct 2026)

What Korean media reported about a viral 'unretouched' Jungkook airport photo that fans call reverse-retouched. Which image is original is unconfirmed.

TL;DR: In mid-October 2026, a close-up photo of BTS's Jungkook at an airport security check circulated in Korean online communities under the label "unretouched." His skin looks very rough in it. Fans and some commenters say the image was deliberately worsened, a practice Korean media call "reverse retouching" (역보정). Fan backlash followed. Which image is the original has not been confirmed, and we have not verified either one. We found no statement from Jungkook or his agency in the reports we read.

What happened, in order

  • Last month (September 2026): Reports say the photo was taken at an airport when Jungkook was travelling for an overseas schedule. It shows him lowering his mask during a security check (Donga Ilbo; Sports Chosun).
  • Around 13–14 Oct 2026: Posts titled along the lines of "recent unretouched photos of Jungkook" spread across online communities and social media, according to Sports Chosun. Donga Ilbo reported on 14 Oct that a heavily enlarged image showed unusually visible pores and an uneven, blemished surface, and that the skin was likened to an "orange peel." (Donga Ilbo, Korean).
  • 14 Oct: Fans pointed to other photos and video from the same place and time in which his skin looks smooth, and said this shows the circulating image had been altered. Sports Chosun and Kagit describe this comparison.
  • 15 Oct: News1, via Sportal Korea, reported that the photo had gone viral and that fans suspected over-editing by haters. The same article notes that BTS is continuing its "Arirang" world tour in South America.

What is claimed, and by whom

  • Fans and netizens: The "unretouched" photo was intentionally distorted by exaggerating contrast and texture. Some call it a smear campaign and ask for legal action against people who tamper with a real person's face.
  • Those who shared it: The reports we read do not quote the original posters, so we cannot describe their stated reasons.
  • Some commenters, per Donga Ilbo: A few fans reacted with remarks such as "that's enough," questioning how much effort it took to produce the image.

What is not known

  • Donga Ilbo states plainly that it has not been established which of the two photos is the original. Kagit says the same.
  • Sports Chosun says the suspicion rests on comparison with other photos from the same day. A comparison like that is consistent with editing, but it is not proof of who made the image or why. Strong zoom, compression and lighting can also change how skin looks.
  • None of the reports we found identifies who created or first posted the image.
  • We found no statement from Jungkook or his agency, BIGHIT MUSIC, about this image.

Why it matters

The episode shows how an image labelled "unedited" can spread before anyone can check it. It also adds to concerns, which Donga Ilbo links to reports of some fans' excessive behaviour during the world tour, about online harassment of public figures. In Korea, spreading false information that harms someone's reputation can lead to legal action, but whether anything here would meet that bar has not been determined and no case has been reported.

A note for readers: please do not repost either image as fact. Treat the "unretouched" label as an unverified claim.
